Feline herpesvirus (FHV) is a pathogen that causes viral rhinotracheitis in cats. The infection occurs mostly in the conjunctiva and upper respiratory tract. This virus is highly specific to cats and has not been found in other species. Feline herpesvirus belongs to Alphaherpesvirinae , with a diameter of about 100~130 nm, has double strands of DNA and phospholipid outer membrane, which is inset with more than ten glycoproteins, low tolerance to the environment, and is very fragile in the environment of acid, high heat, cleaning agents and disinfectants. It can't survive more than 12 hours in a dry environment.
The infection routes of feline herpesvirus can be divided into contact, air and vertical transmission. Contagious infection occurs from direct contact with secretions from the eyes, mouth and nose of infected cats and is usually confined to the upper respiratory tract such as the eyes, nose and trachea. Airborne transmission is mainly through droplets from a sneeze and spreads about one meter. The virus can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause interstitial pneumonia.
